Research into Recording Ambient Sounds and Dialogue

Recording Ambient Sound
Ambient sound recording is the recording of background sound during filming scenes. Each location has a different ambient (background) sound which has to be captured by the sound recorders to be used in film. An example of this would be from Hunger Games: Catching Fire where the sound recorder went to the amazon jungle to record the natural background (ambient) noise to use for their shots. They also recorded the sounds of the beach and the waves coming into shore. The final example of an ambient sound the obtained by the sound recorder is also from the Amazon. The recorded sound is of a Baboon family which is used in the scene when they fight the Baboon's.

Hard cuts aren't used when combining ambient sounds because the sound was suddenly stop then start again for a different clip which would confuse the viewer. Another reason for why hard cuts aren't used would be because its more common to use ambient sounds to establish the next scene. The advantages of recording on scene are the fact that it feels more realistic (sounds realistic). It saves you time searching up non copyright music (sounds). The program used in Hunger Games for managing sounds is Dolby Atmos. Dolby Atmos is a programme where you can manage sound quality and levels in high detail.

Recording Dialogue
When recording dialogue its crucial to get the microphone as close as possible to get the best quality possible. Looping is when an actor re-record his voice while watching their original performance in a loop. When ambient noise is important when filming conversation scenes because a good sound recorder would expect the sound levels to be the same. This can be done by recording the ambient sound in the same room as the character speaking. Also it gives the listeners a realistic feel, like there in that room with them.

Location shooting can be difficult for shooting dialogue because you could have a distinct location where it is impossible to use hidden microphones. To overcome this problem you could buy portable microphones and hide them either on the character or close to where the actor is performing.

Notes for Hunger games video
1: Recorded sounds of the Amazon jungle and ocean for more realistic feel.
2: Microphones 70-feet from each other.
3: Different microphones - same location, creates different sounds.
4: Ambient can guide you into the next scene.
5: Creates a surrounding feeling - like in the jungle.
5: The use of Dolby Atmos - High def sound.
6: Only use hard cuts for effect or reason.
7: Adding in background noises the scene.
8: Sound can establish the next scene before you see it.

1: Room Tone - The film crew is asked to be completely still while the audio engineer records 30 seconds of "room tone." It's just the ambient noise of a location.
2: The use of an external mic to record ambient sound/dialogue.
3: Location noises could disturb the film e.g. refrigerator or fan.
4. Use of headphones when recording.
5: Use blankets to cover up sounds from outside to capture indoor ambient sounds.

1: Choose the right microphone for the right job.
2: The direction of the microphone can determine the quality if the sound.
3: Microphone should be as close to the mouth as possible.
4: Shoot several takes of the set-up.
5: Record 30 seconds of ambient.
6. Make sure the boom operator doesn't move.
7: Don't settle for on board microphone.
8: Get the levels of the sound correct.

1: The name "looping" refers to what often happens: actors re-record their lines while watching their original performances in looped playback.
