P1. Research into Recording Foley Sound and Sound Effects

A Foley artist is someone who creates a sound effect using improvised materials such as leeks and pad mats to create a bone breaking fall. They are needed because some sounds cannot be captured by sound recorders or don't exist. Foley artist create theses sounds for them. They are also used because they are cheaper than creating all sounds from scratch. They are professional sound FX makers.
Anything that moves on the screen the Foley artist provides sound for.

First the Foley artist covers all the footsteps for the main characters then the background footsteps. After recording this they record anything that moves in the film. It can be described like big canvas of sounds and they paint many different colours and textures.

To be a Foley artist you need good timing and a huge creative mind because your thrown in a huge room full of random stuff to create theses specific sounds. If you use real sound instead of using digital productive sounds you can control the elements to create the best sound needed. If you create your own sound you don't need to worry about copyright issues.

In Star Wars the sound recorder Ben Burtt would go around the world collecting different sounds (real animals, radio station wires, and so on) to create theses realistic sounds for the film. The TIE fighter sound from Star Wars came from an altered Elephant bellow.
